10 Common Bath-Time Mistakes Pet Owners Make

Humans do love to dive in the pool and feel all cool. A shower a day keeps the temperature at bay. But it can be quite a task to get your pet under the nozzle, to give it a tidy shower. As stated before, your pet’s skin is quite sensitive as compared to that of humans. They need a different set of care and treatment.

Bathing your pets reduces the risk of allergies, chances of infections, reducing the risk of germs and spread of dirt throughout your home.

1.Temperature.

The skin of your pet is as sensitive as that of a small child. A wrong water temperature will end up creating a negative stimulus for your pet. Too much hot water can burn its skin and too cold can turn unbearable. A balance of not too hot and not too cold will be ideal for your pet.

In order to check proper temperature spray the nozzle on your hand just like it is done while giving bath to your baby. Lukewarm water is best suggested by experts for bathing the pet.

 

2.Spraying Too Hard.

It is best to give your pet bath with a handheld shower. Filling the tub with water is not so requires, as the sound of the running water may frighten your pet.

It is advisable to hold your hand behind the nozzle, restraining the water from hitting hard towards your pet’s skin.

 

3.Select The Right Shampoo

This is the most common mistake done by humans. Applying shampoo that is used by humans can lead to allergies and skin infections. They will not be as useful for your dog’s skin.

Your pet’s skin has a different pH as compared to human skin. They will have a drying effect on your dog’s fur.

It is advisable to consult a veterinarian before using any shampoo. They will guide you right on the kind of shampoo that would suit your pet’s fur. Oatmeal based shampoo is best suited for your pet.

 

4.Allergic Check

Another important thing which the owner often fails to practice is checking whether your pet’s skin is compatible to the shampoo or not. It is advisable to apply a shampoo on a patch of skin on the back of his leg to check the reaction.

 

5.Improper Application Of Soap.

Slight application of soap will not help clean your pooch fully. It is advisable to apply your dog soap and let it soak in for couple of minutes and spread it well to remove all dirt from the fur.

Massage the soap on the fur actively, for about four minutes.

Rinse well the shampoo with water, in the reverse direction. Rinse it starting from the face and go down to legs, in that way if any soap gets stuck in your pet’s eyes, they would get washed off.

 

6.Improper Way Of Cleaning.

Harshly rubbing your pet can cause damage to its skin. Your pet’s face is the most sensitive area, do not use rough cloths or hand to clean it. Use cotton balls or soft wash cloth to clean its face, in order to avoid shampoo or soap getting into its eyes.

Tilt your pet’s ear to the downward side of where you are washing, in order to avoid water getting into your pet’s ears.

 

7.Improper Technique For Brushing.

Who doesn’t like clean shining hair. And who will not like soft and shining fur for your pet.  Soft and shining fur indicates good health.

One needs to know the proper technique while brushing a pet’s hair. Your pet's hair may be filled with matts and knots, brushing it roughly will cause discomfort for them. It is best recommended to consult a vet to groom its fur. They will provide you best advice about the way to brush from head to paw.

Different breeds are comfortable different ways. Sometimes you can brush while shampooing to remove excess undercoat or else when it is totally dry.

 

8. Drying Technique.

Do not dry your pet in haste as we do to dry ourselves. It can lead to twisting of their neck causing fractures. If you want to save your house from flooding with water, it is better to keep towels ready.  Have a few towels ready to drape your pet and in case of dog it will be very useful in case it wishes to shake off during bath.

Gently squeeze the fur to pull out as much as water as possible. Try to get it dry as fast as possible.

 

9.Do Not Blow Dry.

It is recommended to not blow dry your pet. the temperature in the blow dryer cannot be regulated. This will eventually leave your pet’s skin burned. On the other hand they may create fear in their minds as pets are usually wary of sounds.

 

10.Bathing Them Too Often.

Dogs and cats have natural oil on their skin. Bathing them too often in a month can lead to losing of its starkness and oil and this can also lead to irritations to its skin.

Bathing your pet once in a month is enough in order to groom it.
