While there are dog breeds that are counted among the most popular dog breeds, there are few which are not given their due recognition in the popularity chart. Popularity of a breed is calculated keeping in consideration various aspects such as intelligence, loyalty, smartness, alertness to mention a few.
Some breeds though having all these qualities, have remained underrated, playing the role of underdog.
1.Australian Cattle Dog
This medium sized herding breed is energetic and alert. It can grow suspicious of strangers and serve very well as watch dogs. Known for their intelligence, obedience and enduring nature, Australian Cattle Dog remain the most underrated dog breeds.
2. Border Terrier
Never judge a book by its appearance. This saying fits perfectly well in case of border terriers. Though small in size, they are no else to any other dog breed, in case of endurance and loyalty. They are known for their obedience, calm demeanor and affectionate companionship. Their appearance may be vulnerable, but they are tough and strong.

Like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, these are unparalleled match for any task, from chase to hunt. They are intelligent and affectionate. This small sized purebred, is obstinate, intelligent and powerhouse of energy. They are sensitive and tractable. They can be wary of strangers and reserved, but extremely great companions and affectionate creatures.
5.Cairn Terrier
This small breed from United Kingdom, is intelligent, hardy and active. They are fearless, sporting and serve as good watch dogs. The cairn is the essence of terrier; plucky, spirited, bold, inquisitive. It will surely make one wonder how Cairn Terrier failed to get its place among the popular breeds.
6.Braird
Braids are listed among the most underrated dog breeds. they are loving and devoted. This herding dog breed grows quite tall, and weighs up to 90 pounds. They require quite an amount of training, but make excellent companions and are protective towards the family.
7.Irish Water Spaniel
Irish Water Spaniel may appear stylish and gullible, but expression says it all about their intelligence, alertness and obedience. It is the most enthusiastic and fun loving breed. A clown at heart, it can be stubborn and independent, so it needs to be trained with patience, firmness and a sense of humor. They make great companions. With them around entertainment and shower of love is guaranteed.
8.Skye Terrier
A fearless, stubborn and intelligent terrier breed is a great companion to keep. They are alert, agile and serve as excellent watchdog and are highly companionable with children.
9.Australian Terrier
These small sized Terrier breed, is fun-loving and adventurous. They need daily exercise to keep itself active. It's clever and craves for attention. They are excellent companions and love attention.
10.Gordon Setter
Large and athletic, Gordon Setter are perfect companion for sporting activities. They may be calm but can feel the bout of jealously from time to time.
