I Am Vegetarian Or Vegan, Should My Dog Be One Too?

Pets like Cats and Dogs have system is conditioned in a different way as compared to that of humans. These are carnivorous, who needs chunks of energy to perform their daily activities. Normal diet of vegetarian foods will not provide them with enough energy that it usually needs.

Dog’s intestine is customized to digest meat, vegetarian and vegan diet won’t provide them with sufficient nutrition needed for their body. Many dog food contain meatballs, which provides them with proteins needed for their body.  These proteins are good for building their bones and muscles.

If you are uncomfortable in feeding your dog with meat, you can opt for feeding it eggs. A lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet can prove beneficial. Eggs are supposed to have high amount of protein in them which is beneficial for pets. The biological value of a protein measures its ability to supply the individual amino acids that an animal needs. Eggs are an excellent source of protein for dogs.

If you follow a vegan diet devoid of any animal products, though trickier,  in some cases may suit your dog’s diet. The right balance of different plant-based sources of protein (e.g., beans, corn, soy and whole grains) can still provide the needed amino acids.

A non-vegetarian diet contains all the required proteins and amino acids for the dog. Whereas, a vegetarian diet may provide lesser nutrition to your dog. A well-balanced diet will give your dog a long healthy lifestyle.

The final call is on you. If your dog is well acquainted with vegetarian or vegan diet, getting its system habituated to new food will not be strenuous thing. Before you go about to feed your dog with vegetarian or vegan diet, take proper guidance and advice from your veterinarian.
