Cats And Litter Boxes The Strange Relation

The relation between Cat and litter boxes goes down to history. Every pet owner knows the fondness towards litter boxes for cats. Felines are known to spend a lot of time in their litter box, which needs to be kept in a place which is pleasant and doesn’t frighten your cat.

Cats would often get frightened if they are placed forcefully into the litter box. There is no need to guide them towards the litter box, they will themselves be drawn towards it whenever it feels like to relieve itself. Cats are known to be clean and obedient pets who like to keep their surrounding clean.

The most important aspect in choosing a litter box for your cat is to decide a proper location for it. The spot should be such which provides enough privacy for the cat to relieve itself, away from noises and commotion. It is important to place the litter box of the cat in a place where there is no frequent interference of people, away from heat causing devices like refrigerators, heaters, etc. Placing the litter box near areas emitting out more heat may intensify the odor which will evade the cat from going near it.

Cats are vary of odor and known for cleanliness, the hate their litter box to be placed nearby to their food, the odor of which will cause them avoiding food and drinking water. Placing more than one or two litter boxes in the house will prove beneficial as your cat need not travel long in order to relieve itself.

It is recommended to clean the litter boxes using a cat litter scoop at least twice a day. Cats are known to have excellent sense of smell which is not possible for humans to sense. Even slight dirt in the litter box can be detected very well by them and they may evade from using it till it gets cleaned. It is suggested to clean the litter box using cleaning agent like ammonia-free detergent before filling in fresh litter. Caution need to be rendered not to use agents which can prove to be poisonous for the cat’s health. Also avoid using fragrances like citrus which can make the cat not use the litter box again.

1. Litter boxes come in two categories : - Clumping litter and non-clumping litter. It is recommended to choose those which are not harsh to the cat’s paw pads and are effective in masking the bad odor. There are other variety of biodegradable litter box made of pine-wood, recycled newspaper, corn or wheat grain which can be used for your cats, as it can also be beneficial to the cat’s health.

It is usually suggested to not use covered litter boxes, as many a times it is unable to remove the odor if the litter remains uncleaned for days.

2. Often owners wonder how much litter needs to be filled in the box. It is recommended to coat the box with litter till the height of about two inches or so, also not loading the box with excess litter.

Cleaning the litter box frequently and placing it at the right spot is immensely important, which will prevent the cat from falling prey to any disease.
