Beware! Your Dog May Contract To Leptospira - A Deadly Bacteria. Know How Can It Be Prevented

We all are well acquainted to the old saying “ Love is in the air when your pet is along”, but that is the not the only thing that is present in the air. Along with love, the air also contains lots of infectious bacteria that can prey you and your pet, enough to make them ill. The air outside as can be heinous for humans to breathe, in similar way they can be infectious to your pet as well, especially for your four-pawed buddy. One such infectious bacteria is Leptospira that is quite in news from past few weeks.

So before going into the detailing of how can one prevent their pooch and themselves from falling prey to this bacteria, let's get a brief about what exactly is leptospira and how it spreads.

Leptospirosis is caused because of Leptospira is an infectious bacteria that is known to attack the canines, which can indirectly endanger your life if you have a pet at your place. This bacteria can be lethal to your pet’s health and also dangerous to the owner’s health if not taken proper care.

This lethal bacteria is a corkscrew-shaped bacteria that can contaminate water. It is found in the urine of the dog. When this urine comes in contact with water, it can affect anyone coming in contact with it. This can leave long effect on a person by entering into the body through eyes, nose, mouth and through any cut in the body. Infection by this bacteria has led to significant amount of death in United States, leading to increase in mortality rate across the country.

As supposed previously,  this bacteria affects rural dogs and urban pets are far reach from getting infected has been proven wrong. Recent studies state, urban dogs are more susceptible to get infected by Leptospirosis. This infectious disease once having entered into the system first manifests as loss of appetite, vomiting, pain and increased thirst, which when left untreated will lead to failure of kidney and liver. If your dog shows any of the above symptoms, take it immediately to the vet and get the required tests performed for early diagnosis.

Leptospirosis can be prevented by taking extra care while handling your pooch. On personal level, watch out your dog doesn’t play or go to areas filled with water or drink from puddles. As stated, “Prevention is better can cure”, getting your four-pawed buddy vaccinated for Leptospirosis once a year can gradually decrease the risk to a great extent.

Leptospirosis is not a new disease but something that existed from long and have come to surface only recently. Prevent your pooch from getting infected by this lethal disease by getting it vaccinated regularly and taking proper care of your dog.
